The five original cast members of Puteri Gunung Ledang (PGL) The Musical will join forces tonight (March 28) at 9pm via Instagram Live in an effort to raise funds to help out in these difficult Covid-19 times.
Puan Sri Tiara Jacquelina, Stephen Rahman-Hughes, Datuk AC Mizal, Adlin Aman Ramlie and Ida Mariana, who starred in the musical's debut season at KL's Istana Budaya in 2006, will reunite once again for this crowdfunding drive put together by Maybank Heart and humanitarian organisation Mercy Malaysia.
Aptly named Saturday Night Live On IG, the casual hangout session will have Jacquelina playing the role of the host as she checks in with her former cast members - one at a time - during this movement control order period.
Mercy Malaysia launched its Covid-19 Pandemic Fund on March 18 to support the country’s healthcare system in battling the pandemic and to take care of the essential needs of marginalised communities.
The organisation aims to raise RM300,000. At press time, it has raised more than RM50,000.
On her Instagram page, Jacquelina, who played the titular role in both the movie and the stage version of PGL, posted, “We’re tired of sitting at home and just watching the war against Covid-19 helplessly.”
Through a friend, Jacquelina got to know about Maybank Foundation’s Maybank Heart initiative to help out Mercy Malaysia.
Jacquelina decided to use Instagram as a platform to create some awareness for Mercy Malaysia. She says she immediately contacted a few of her celebrity friends and AC Mizal, who played her brother Gusti Adipati in PGL, was the first to respond.
Before she knew it, Stephen and Adlin, who played Hang Tuah and Sultan Mahmud Shah respectively in PGL, responded and it became a PGL reunion party. Stephen will be joining in from Britain.
Ida, who played the mystical character of Bayan in the musical, also confirmed her participation.
“It just happened organically, ” Jacquelina says in a recent phone interview. “Many people have been asking to see the original cast of the musical together for some time.”
The last time all five of them performed together was for the PGL In Concert - Rebirth Of The Legend in 2015 at Istana Budaya.
“So I invite everyone to join us on March 28, from wherever you’re at. We’re just going to have a casual chat, talk about the current situation and what people should and shouldn’t be doing.
“Also, it’s our way of shining some light on what’s happening right now. This is our way to help those who are risking their lives at the frontlines and also those who are badly affected by this.
“You can be a responsible citizen from the comfort of your own home by contributing to the fund. No amount is too small, ” says Jacquelina.
There will be a live update on Jacquelina’s Instagram page on the total amount of funds collected during the session tonight.
